A school in Scotland is making headlines for a very modern reason—it’s the first school in the UK to accept Bitcoin (BTC) for tuition payments. The school, called Lomond School, says this move is part of its effort to stay ahead and embrace innovation.
Why Bitcoin?
In a recent blog post, Lomond School said that choosing Bitcoin wasn’t just about keeping up with trends—it actually fits well with the school’s values. They see Bitcoin as a symbol of independent thinking and innovation, which are important to their teaching approach.
Since Bitcoin isn’t controlled by any government or central authority, and anyone can use it, the school believes it reflects values like freedom, access for all, and financial inclusion.

“Bitcoin is open to anyone who wants to learn. That makes it more fair and inclusive—especially for people in countries where access to banks is limited. We also think it’s a great real-world example of topics like economics, computer science, and ethics.”
Parents Asked for It
One of the reasons Lomond decided to accept Bitcoin was because there was growing interest from both local parents and international partners. This shows that more people are open to using crypto, not just for investing, but for real-world uses like school fees.
For now, the school is only accepting Bitcoin, not other cryptocurrencies. They said Bitcoin stands out for being secure, limited in supply, easy to track, and strong over time.
What Happens When You Pay in Bitcoin?
If you’re wondering how it all works: Lomond has partnered with Musket and CoinCorner, both regulated companies that follow identity checks and security rules. They’ll handle the crypto payments for the school.
Also, as soon as the school receives Bitcoin, it will be converted straight into British pounds. This way, the school doesn’t have to worry about sudden price swings in the crypto market.
Will the School Keep Bitcoin in the Future?
Maybe. The school says it might start saving some of the Bitcoin it receives (known as building a Bitcoin treasury)—but only if the school community supports it. Right now, it’s just an idea for the future.

“Creating a Bitcoin treasury is something we might do later, but only if there’s enough support from our families and if we can do it in a safe and responsible way.”
Other Schools Are Doing It Too
While Lomond is the first in the UK to take Bitcoin for tuition, schools in other countries have already jumped on board:
- Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania) accepts crypto for executive programs.
- King’s College in New York started accepting Bitcoin back in 2014.
- Universities in El Salvador (the first country to make Bitcoin legal currency) are teaching and using it more and more.
- University of Wyoming is even doing serious research on Bitcoin, calling it “digital gold.”
